Thermal Simulation Laboratory

Thermal StimulationThe Thermal Simulation Laboratory was developed in response to certain measurement needs that are specific to power plants. Designed to simulate power plant exhaust stack conditions, the lab has advanced thermal controls, an operational temperature threshold of 400C, and is easily configured for various research projects. This laboratory is ideal for applications such as catalyst formulation, exhaust sensor development, durability studies, and other development projects where controlled exhaust conditions are desired.

The Laboratory employs a TECO 146C Dynamic Gas Calibrator. The calibration system provides precise concentrations of the species target gases by utilizing precision gas dilution. In this case, a supply of “zero” air is required to dilute the higher concentration ammonia calibration gases in order to attain the target gas concentration to be delivered to the sample cell. Zero air refers to the purity of the diluent gas, indicating a non-detectable concentration of the pollutant under investigation. The calibrator has a purported accuracy of better than 2% of the full scale reading.

Gaseous water is introduced into the blended sample gas stream in order to provide the desired water content. The water generation system consists of a water reservoir, a graduated burette, a positive displacement pump, and a heating system. The temperature of the sample cell is controlled through a heater capable of maintaining a desired gas temperature up to 750ºF (400ºC) within the cell path. A single insulated radiative heater was custom ordered and fitted over the cell. Temperature in either cell is regulated by thermocouple feedback to a PID temperature controller coupled to solid-state relays. The system in its current configuration can accommodate flows up to 10 l/m.
